If you own a healthcare facility or are in charge of running one there
is something that you must always be on the lookout for - bed bugs.
These
tiny bed bugs multiply very fast and once they do they are very hard to get
rid of.
Worse yet, they hide in the smallest nooks and crannies and
don't come out to feed until night time.
They bite and leave red, itchy
bumps that will make your patients very uncomfortable - some may even
seek treatment elsewhere.
Worse yet, they will carry them back home and
start new infestations there.
So how do you make sure that you don't get
bed bugs in the first place?
-
Make sure that your employees are well trained on how to identify
bed bugs and bed bug bites. There should be a procedure in place that is known
to all on what to do when bed bugs are spotted.
-
Housekeeping should be trained on how to look for bed bugs in
laundry and in furniture. They should know how to spot fecal and blood
spots, cast skins, eggs, and the various body parts the bed bugs
leave behind.
-
All laundry, including bed sheets, should be labeled according to
department and then floor and room. This way in case bed bugs are spotted
in laundry the source of the infestation can be tracked down and dealt
with.
-
You should schedule inspections at least 4 times a year when
everything is checked for bed bugs - beds, bed sheets, bed frames, bed
headboards, wheelchairs and medical equipment that patients come into
contact with.
-
Medical staff should know how to identify bed bug bites on new
patients so that the right procedures can be followed during admissions. This
way the hospital will avoid getting bed bugs from patients. Part of the
discharge process for such patients should include a talk about bed bugs
and what they should do when they get home to kill the infestation.
- If a hospital employees notices bed bugs on a mattress they should
immediately cover it with a plastic sheet so as to stop the infestation
from spreading.
