Should you be worried about Mosquitoes?

According to recent statistics, the number of mosquitoes in the UK is rising. The number of mosquito bite reports has grown almost 3 times from what was reported just 10 years ago. The country is home to about 30 varieties of mosquitoes but a few of these are not native – they have been transported from other countries. What you should be worried about is the kind of mosquitoes that cause malaria and fortunately, there are very few of these in the UK. In fact, most of the 2,000 reported cases of malaria every year are by people who have travelled from other countries.

Mosquitoes breed in wet and warm weather. They have to find stagnant water to lay their eggs which hatch after 2 or 3 days. It doesn’t matter if the water is shallow – even an inch of stagnant water near your home will provide a sufficient environment for female mosquitoes to lay their eggs. An adult mosquito can live for up to six months and that’s why it is very important that you destroy their breeding grounds right away before they have a chance to reproduce. An interesting fact about mosquitoes is that only the females live on blood; the males live on nectar.

What you can do to prevent mosquitoes out of your home?

There are several things that you can do to keep mosquitoes out of your home. The first thing that you should do is get rid of any place where mosquitoes might breed. Even old tyres that have a small puddle of water are perfect breeding grounds. Any empty containers that may collect water when it rains must go too. If there are holes where water can pool when it rains, fill them so that they are level with the rest of the ground.
Citronella is an excellent mosquito repellent; so long as no one in the home is allergic to the smell, you can light citronella candles around the house.
Mow your lawn every week to destroy mosquito hideouts. They like to shelter in tall grass and weeds and then come out at night to feed.
If you use these tips, you will successfully keep mosquitoes out of your home.
