Fleas and our pets, how to control and prevent fleas from infesting your home.

Fleas are pretty common among pets; as a matter of fact, they are the most common external parasites. They are not just pesky, little jumping insects that cause itching and irritation; they have the potential to transmit diseases because they feed on blood. They breed so fast and it is important to get rid of them as soon as you notice them. Fleas travel with humans and animals and even a single contact between your dog and an infested dog in the park can lead to fleas in your home.

The first thing you need to do when dealing with fleas is to make sure that your pet doesn’t have them. You will know that it has fleas if it is scratching, licking and general irritation. They can also cause hair loss and pale lips and gums. One of the best ways to get rid of them is using a flea dip. There are many flea dips that you can choose from in the market. Make sure to get a brand that will be as kind to your pet’s body as possible. Follow instructions on how much you should use.

Flea shampoos are known to work as well although these tend to have a very short period of effectiveness. You may shampoo your dog today and see fleas in less than 48 hours. Also, they don’t work much for cats because cats are generally hard to shampoo. If you choose to go this way, choose a shampoo brand that is completely safe for your dog.

A flea collar can also be effective although they also have a short lifespan – they will keep fleas off your pet for a couple of days at the most. The collar releases toxins into the fatty layer of the skin so that when the fleas bite the die. The other problem with collars is that they tend to work on the head and neck area only.
