What is a hornet, how to defend yourself and your home.

A hornet is an insect in the wasp family that more or less looks like a yellowjacket. They can grow to be quite big, sometimes exceeding 2 inches when they are fully grown. Hornet populations are common in Europe, Asia and Africa. They usually nest in wood and they can be quite predatorial. A hornet’s sting is very painful and in some cases can even be fatal. If you live in an area where they are common, dealing with hornets is important because the larger their populations grow the more risk they present.

The first thing that you must do is make sure that you’re safe. If you are not sure that you can be safe it is best to call in a professional hornet removal service. When dealing with hornets, you first need to identify where their nest(s) is. They like to nest in sheltered areas like beneath rafters, on branches and in the basement or the attic. Their nests look like the nest of a wasp but they are a little larger. They attach the nest upside down so you will see the cones.

One of the ways to remove hornets is to bag them. It is best done on the evening when hornets tend to slow down a bit. You have to wear protective gear and then take the bag as close to the nest as possible, cut the nest from the root and then secure the bag.

You can also look for hornet and wasp sprays. You need to soak the hornet’s nest in this insecticide so that when they come back, they get the poison in their systems. You can find these sprays in any hardware stores; don’t buy anything expensive because they all work in the same way.

If you are not successful with these two methods, you can call in professionals to help you deal with the hornets.
