Did you know that in more than 50% of homes that have bedbugs infestations the
owners have no idea they are present?
Bedbug infestations have become commonplace
and you can carry them home from anywhere. You can get them on your
clothes in a bus, from a hospital seat or bed, in a hotel room - in
short, so long as it is a highly trafficked area there is a chance that
it has bedbugs.
As a homeowner you should be concerned because these bedbugs multiply very
fast and before you know it you will have a bedbug infestation on your hands.
There are certain signs that tell you that you have bedbugs in the
home. Keep in mind that these bedbugs don't just thrive in beds - they can
also be found in the nooks and crannies of furniture and even in the
creases of your sofa.
Here is what you should look out for:
- The most obvious is bedbug bites. These are small, itchy bumps
that you will notice in the morning. This is because bedbugs feed at
night. The bumps may be scattered or in a row and they can be on any
part the body that is exposed during sleep.
- Many people assume that one sign of bedbugs is blood on bed
sheets and clothing - after all they are blood suckers. This is not
true! bedbug stains are actually dark brown or black because the blood
is already digested. If you notice more than a few such stains there is a
good chance that you have a bedbug infestation.
- You may also find their exoskeletons or shells on bedding and in
clothing as well as dark fecal matter on bed sheets. The exoskeletons
are clear in color as the bedbugs shed them as they grow bigger.
- Lastly, you will know that you have a bedbug infestation if you see them
crawling around. When their numbers swell they are forced to crawl
around during the day and you may be able to spot a few of them.
The important thing to do if you find bedbugs or suspect that you have
them is to call in a professional exterminator.
There are insecticides
that are available commercially but the problem with dealing with a
bedbug infestation yourself is that you may not get to all of them, and
you will find tackling the eggs even harder.
A professional knows where to find them
and he has the tools and chemicals to get rid of them safely and for
good.
